Every year, thousands of people die in traffic accidents across the nation. In Connecticut alone, the three-year period from 2018 through 2020 saw 787 fatalities. The state has 46,000 miles of roads, and a recently completed study of vehicular fatalities over that same period of time reveals that some segments of those roads are exceptionally hazardous.
The two most dangerous stretches of road in Connecticut, judging by raw numbers, were the 4.9 miles of Interstate 95 between Stratford and Bridgeport and the 1.2 miles of SR-10 from Kimberly Avenue to Boston Post Road in New Haven. Each of these roads saw eight deaths from eight crashes, which together accounted for one percent of all fatalities in the entire state. However, SR-10 is mile for mile the more dangerous route, with 6.9 crashes per mile, while I-95 had 1.6 crashes per mile.
Another particularly dangerous roadway for drivers is the one mile stretch of SR-83 between Countrywood and Hockanum Avenue in Vernon. With six fatal accidents, this road came close to matching SR-10 in fatal accidents per mile. Four other road segments had six or more lethal accidents.
The rate at which fatalities occur in any particular part of any particular roadway changes from year to year, but the roads cited in the survey are all likely to remain dangerous to motorists and their passengers in 2023. In any case, no roadway is immune from accidents caused by negligent drivers. Your best defense against becoming a statistic is to pay attention to road conditions, other vehicles and your own driving, and be ready to take reasonable measures to avoid approaching danger.
If you were injured or someone in your family was killed in a traffic accident that may have been caused by another person’s negligence, retaining the services of an experienced, skilled auto accident attorney gives you a better chance of holding the culpable parties responsible. Even if you were partly at fault for the accident, you may be able to obtain a proportion of your damages in a settlement or at trial. If you are not represented, the other party’s insurer will almost certainly offer you substantially less than your case is worth.
