As it does every year now, the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities (CHRO) has released statistics for fiscal year 2015-16. The CHRO is the state agency tasked with eliminating discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, and credit transactions. The 2015-16 statistics show a continued rise in discrimination complaints.
The CHRO received a total of 2616 complaints in fiscal year 2015-16, up from 2482 in the previous fiscal year. Of those 2616 complaints, 2160 alleged discrimination in employment, 220 in housing, 217 in public accommodations, 0 in credit transactions, and 10 in other (i.e., complaints that are not readily classified as one of the other categories).
Between 2014-15 and 2015-16, there were increases in the number of discrimination complaints regarding, most notably, age (from 537 to 579), physical disability (from 603 to 633), race (from 734 to 744), religion (from 85 to 101), and sexual orientation (from 65 to 80). To the contrary, there were decreases in the number of complaints regarding, most notably, ancestry (from 224 to 216), color (from 595 to 565), national origin (from 303 to 273), and sex (from 615 to 578). Retaliation claims are also up yet again, albeit modestly, with an increase from 763 to 796.
In addition, the CHRO closed 2793 cases in 2015-16, up from 2334 in 2014-15, which increase reflects the CHRO’s recent efforts to move cases through the process more efficiently.
Alas, the upward trend in discrimination complaints filed with the CHRO that started in 2012 does not appear to be slowing down.
