Long summer days and warm, pleasant weather give us more opportunity to get out and enjoy all the recreation and adventures that Connecticut has to offer. But with increased outdoor activity comes a rise in the number of accidents and injuries suffered. Of course, some summer activities tend to be more dangerous than others, and it’s important to take the right precautions to keep yourself safe.
Here are five of the most common causes of summertime injuries in our state.
Water activities — Pools and waterparks are frequent sites of preventable injuries. Slips and falls are common, potentially resulting in broken bones, concussions and other injuries. Boating is another injury-prone activity. Several serious accidents occur on Connecticut lakes, rivers and offshore waters every summer.
Playground accidents — Kids have more time to play in the summer, and that means more chances to get hurt on the playground. Broken bones, lacerations, and sprains and strains are examples of common playground injuries. An accident may happen because of poorly maintained playground equipment, lack of adequate warning signs or some other type of negligence on the part of a private entity or municipality.
Motor vehicle accidents — Summer is the most popular driving season in Connecticut, and with so many vehicles on the road, it’s no surprise that accidents increase. Negligent and reckless driving sends hundreds of people to the hospital every summer with internal injuries, severed limbs, broken bones, traumatic brain injuries and other serious conditions. Insurance doesn’t always cover all the resulting costs.
Bicycle and pedestrian accidents — The summer weather offers the perfect opportunity to bike, walk and run. But bicyclists and pedestrians have to deal with higher volumes of vehicle traffic, and all it takes is one car or truck driver to take their eyes off the road for a second, and suddenly there’s a crash. Bikers and pedestrians are no match for 2- and 3-ton vehicles, so serious and even fatal injuries often result.
Trampoline accidents — Bad landings on trampolines or falls from an apparatus can result in wrist, arm, leg and ankle fractures as well as spinal injuries. It may be possible to bring an injury claim against a trampoline park or adventure park, the manufacturer of a trampoline or possibly even a private homeowner with such an apparatus on their property.
