Connecticut roads are among the busiest in the nation, due in part to our small state being the fourth most densely populated. In addition, Connecticut serves as a corridor between the New York City and Boston metropolises, so its highways and roadways carry far more than its fair share of traffic. There are about 46,000 miles of roads in the state, but certain parts of the road system present enhanced risks for drivers. Appreciating the hazards is essential to steering away from trouble.
I-95 — This busy interstate runs the length of Connecticut. Two legs of it are particularly dangerous: the five miles from Bridgeport to Stratford and the five miles from Milford to West Haven. Those stretches experience a high frequency of fatal crashes per mile, due to major volumes of traffic moving at high speeds.
SR-10 — The mile-long segment of this road running through downtown New Haven en route to I-95 has multiple intersections, including an accident-prone crossing of Boston Post Road (US-1).
US-1 — Boston Post Road is a congested and dangerous highway, especially a 4.3 mile segment running from West Haven to East Haven. Besides going through downtown areas, the road endures high volume as an alternate to an often congested stretch of I-95.
I-84 — This heavily trafficked interstate runs 4.1 miles through downtown Hartford and East Hartford. It includes complex exit/entrance ramp systems, making it a frequent area of crashes.
SR-8 — This road includes several busy segments. A 4.3 stretch from Trumbull to Bridgeport, connecting US-15 to I-95, has a high frequency of fatal accidents, particularly in the downtown Bridgeport area. Another dangerous segment runs 3.1 miles north from I-84 in Waterbury.
Certain highways in Connecticut pose hazards despite their countrified look and feel. Examples are:
Merritt Parkway — The Merritt goes through miles of greenery, including beautiful trees. However, the trees can shed branches or even fall down in storms, creating road impediments that lead to accidents. In addition, the parkway has only two lanes in each direction, which are less than the capacity it needs as an alternate to parallel I-95.
US-6 — Running east from Bristol through Hartford and eventually to the Rhode Island state line, the scenic “Grand Army of the Republic Highway” has multiple intersections as well as many serpentine curves that can be hazardous.
US-17 and US-9 — There have been hundreds of crashes at the merge of these highways in Middletown, where cars must come to a stop and then quickly accelerate to highway speed.
Most accidents on these roads are traffic-related, which means that if you were hurt in a crash, another driver may be partly responsible. An experienced Connecticut auto accident attorney can advise you and work to protect your legal rights.
